In 1881 six influential Amsterdam citizens formed a committee. Their goal To build a world-class concert hall. Amsterdam lacked a proper venue for large-scale musical performances. Existing halls were inadequate. The Concertgebouw was the solution. They purchased land near the Rijksmuseum. Construction began in 1883. The architect Adolf Leonard van Gendt designed it. He was inspired by Leipzig’s Neue Gewandhaus. Its renowned acoustics were a model for the Concertgebouw.

The Concertgebouw opened in 1888. Its grand hall boasts impressive dimensions. It measures 44 by 27.8 by 17.5 meters. Wide corridors surround the hall.
