Feel the cool concrete beneath your fingertips. This is the Brugknuffel. A seemingly simple sculpture. Yet its story is rich and surprising.

Created in 1962 by artist Herman van der Heide. The Brugknuffel is more than just a pretty face. It’s a piece of public art. Part of the Sloterbrug’s southern balustrade. This bridge connects Amsterdam and Badhoevedorp. It spans the Haarlemmermeer ring canal. The location is within the Haarlemmermeer municipality.

Interestingly Herman van der Heide often collaborated with architect Dirk Sterenberg. Sterenberg worked for Amsterdam Public Works. Their collaboration is evident in other Amsterdam projects like the Hortusbrug.

The Brugknuffel survived a bridge renovation in the 1990s. The original bridge keeper’s house did not. The sculpture’s name is quite unusual. It came from a 1991 competition. Organized by the Badhoevedorp and Sloten village councils. They wanted a name for the artwork.

Dick van Rooijen from Badhoevedorp won. He saw two figures in the sculpture. One from Sloten one from Badhoevedorp meeting and hugging. An alternative title for the Brugknuffel is Zwaan. Meaning Swan.

This unassuming sculpture has a remarkable history. It’s a testament to collaboration and resilience. A symbol of connection between two communities. A quiet witness to the changing landscape of Amsterdam. So take a moment. Appreciate the Brugknuffel. Its simple form holds a wealth of stories within.
