Built between 2018 and 2023, the Brug Ouderkerk stands as a modern marvel. It replaced its predecessor, a bascule bridge from 1937-1939. This new Brug Ouderkerk isn’t just one bridge, but two. This double bascule bridge carries the N522 across the Amstel River. It links Ouderkerk aan de Amstel in the municipality of Ouder-Amstel with the Oranjebaan in Amstelveen. The northern section opened in 2022. The southern bridge followed in 2023. This dual design improves traffic flow and safety. It also accommodates bus routes and even considers future tram lines. The original bridge, built between 1937 and 1939, had no official name. Locals called it various names, like the Bridge over the Amstel (near Ouderkerk), bridge in the N522, New Bridge, or Provincial Bridge. It had two lanes for vehicles, a narrow two-way cycle path on the north side, and a footpath on the south side. However, it was narrower than the roads leading to it, often causing traffic jams. By the early 21st century, it was clear a replacement was necessary. The Brug Ouderkerk project explored several options, including an aqueduct. However, the final design chose the double bascule bridge. The construction faced a setback in January 2021 when a component of the bridge fell and damaged the foundation. Despite this, the northern section opened in 2022. The older bridge was then demolished, making way for the southern section. Another incident occurred in November 2023. A defect forced the bridge’s closure. A temporary ferry and later a pontoon bridge maintained the crossing until the bridge reopened. In January 2024, it was discovered that a design flaw weakened a part of the northern bridge. Repairs were made and the bridge reopened in March. The Brug Ouderkerk is a vital link for buses and other vehicles. It also provides a safe passage for cyclists and pedestrians. It represents a significant investment in the region’s infrastructure.
