Forty-two meters long. That’s Brug 981. A concrete behemoth spanning a drainage ditch in Amsterdam-Noord. It’s not your typical picturesque Amsterdam bridge. It’s a functional marvel. A testament to mid-century modern design. Brug 981 is more than just a way to cross a canal.

Designed by Dirk Sterenberg of the Public Works Department. It’s a study in understated elegance. The bridge carries two eight-meter-wide sidewalks. In between lies the roadway. Its unique design is immediately apparent. The structure is a culvert bridge. The culvert itself is much narrower than the bridge. This creates curious side extensions. On these extensions sit benches. Perfect places for quiet contemplation. Looking out across the water.

The benches aren’t an afterthought. They’re integrated into the design. The balustrades of the terraces form the bridge’s railings. These railings are detailed. Concrete decorative elements topped with small metal bars. Every detail is considered. A unified vision. The result is a functional bridge that is also aesthetically pleasing. A true success of Dutch engineering.

Construction was completed in 1967. It was part of a larger project. Thirteen-two concrete piles were driven into the ground. This was done between April and July 1966. The bridge and its sister Brug 985 were constructed simultaneously. They were part of the same contract. A testament to efficient planning.

Brug 981. More than just a bridge. It’s a design statement. It’s a place of quiet reflection. A piece of Amsterdam’s history. One that’s often overlooked but richly deserves your attention. Take a moment. Appreciate the subtle beauty. The thoughtful design. The functional elegance of Brug 981. This remarkable bridge awaits your discovery.
