Brug 96 stands before you a testament to Amsterdam’s evolving cityscape. This seemingly simple bridge has a story etched in its iron frame. For centuries a bridge has spanned this very spot. Look closely at Brug 96. You are standing on the western edge of Prinsengracht. Below you the Passeerdersgracht flows gently.

Let’s rewind to 1625. Picture a map meticulously drawn by Balthasar Florisz van Berckenrode. Even then a bridge marked this crossing over the Prince Graft and Passeerders Graft. The surrounding street corners were empty waiting for development. By 1649 Joan Blaeu’s map shows the area fully built.

But the Brug 96 you see today is from May 1952. Publieke Werken spent almost a year strengthening and widening the old bridge. Amsterdam’s growing traffic demanded change. The renovation expanded the roadway to six meters. Two footpaths were added each about 2.5 meters wide. Imagine the construction. Sections of the canals were drained to allow work. Pedestrians gingerly crossed a temporary bridge.

Bridge design philosophies shifted over time. Once, the city favored replacing girder bridges with arch bridges even if no arch bridge had existed before. This was called “terugrestaureren” or restoring to a past that never was. Girder bridges were considered unattractive. Later this view changed. The city embraced preserving these functional structures.

And so a girder bridge was chosen for Brug 96. This allowed gas pipes to be discreetly integrated into its structure. The newspaper De Waarheid hailed it as a jewel for the city. Since then Brug 96 has only needed occasional repaving. Take a moment to appreciate Brug 96. It is more than just a crossing. It connects Amsterdam’s past and present. It shows how infrastructure adapts to the needs of a bustling city.
