Over Brug 94 a sturdy iron bridge spanning the Leidsegracht. This unassuming bridge holds centuries of history. It connects the Raamdwarsstraat to the Lijnbaansgracht. Brug 94 isn’t just a pathway. It’s a silent witness to Amsterdam’s evolution.

Even in 1662 Daniel Stalpaert’s design already showed a bridge here. He lived at Leidsegracht 108. This was then the home of the city architect. Stalpaert’s home overlooked the bustling waterway. He witnessed the bridge’s transformation firsthand. The area around Brug 94 developed slowly. The 1688 Frederik de Wit map shows the area densely built up.

A new chapter began in 1864. The old wooden bridge was deemed unsafe. The city council decided to replace it. The cost was 3800 guilders. Construction started a year later. The current Brug 94 likely dates to 1902. A tender was put out in February that year. It announced the renewal of bridge number 94. All traffic was halted. Foot traffic had a temporary walkway. The iron girder bridge was complete in May.

Brug 94 almost disappeared in 1913. The city planned to fill the Leidsegracht. They wanted to create a major thoroughfare. This plan never came to fruition. This saved Brug 94 from demolition. Unlike other bridges in Amsterdam Brug 94’s height remained unchanged. It was repaired but never lowered. Even a mishap in 1938 with a barge captain didn’t change that. The captain hit his head on the bridge. He was rescued but suffered a skull fracture.

Today Brug 94 stands as a testament to Amsterdam’s resilient past. It quietly connects two sides of Amsterdam’s rich history. It is a perfect symbol of continuity amidst change. The bridge’s steadfast presence reminds us of the city’s enduring spirit.
