Elevated above the bustling Nieuwe Purmerweg, Brug 939 stands as a testament to Amsterdam’s innovative urban planning. Brug 939 isn’t just a bridge. It’s a concrete narrative of a city embracing modern design. Built in 1967/1968, Brug 939 is part of the Waddenweg, a vital artery running north-south through Amsterdam-Noord. The bridge elegantly spans the bicycle path of the Nieuwe Purmerweg, showcasing the city’s forward-thinking approach to separate traffic flows. This concept, popular in Amsterdam at the time, often involved multiple viaducts and tunnels at intersections. Brug 939 and its neighboring structure, Brug 961, connected by a retaining wall, exemplify this urban design philosophy. Dirk Sterenberg, the architect behind these bridges, infused them with Amsterdam’s signature blue and white hues. His distinctive design for Brug 939 included angled steel plates for the balustrades, contrasting with the supporting railings above. Over time, the western balustrade transformed. It was replaced with wooden noise barriers, now adorned with climbing plants. Sterenberg’s prolific bridge designs, numbering over 170 by 2008, dot Amsterdam’s landscape. Brug 939’s construction coincided with several other bridges in the area, all built by Van Hattum en Blankevoort. These structures remain largely intact, silently narrating Amsterdam’s ongoing urban evolution. Brug 939, a seemingly simple viaduct, whispers a story of design ingenuity and urban development, woven into the very fabric of Amsterdam-Noord.
