Envision a concrete structure. It is not just a bridge. It is Brug 869. Here we stand before an interesting construction in Amsterdam-Zuid. It is more than just a way to cross the Europaboulevard. It is a piece of the city’s infrastructure puzzle.
Brug 869 is officially a bridge. Yet it cleverly functions as a viaduct or tunnel. Below our feet, pedestrians and cyclists travel north to south. They move freely beneath the Europaboulevard. Above us, the north exit from Rijksweg 10 merges onto the Europaboulevard.
This structure is part of an elaborate network. This network seamlessly blends the Europaboulevard, the highway, train tracks, and metro lines. Three key players collaborated on this project. Rijkswaterstaat managed the ring road. Nederlandse Spoorwegen/ProRail oversaw the railway. The Amsterdam municipality took charge of the metro bridge and surrounding areas.
Interestingly, Brug 869 was not a solitary project. The municipality had already constructed Brug 868 and Brug 867. Brug 868 lies beneath the Europaboulevard. Brug 867 serves as the access point from Europaboulevard to the Rijksweg. Brug 869 became the final piece of this trio. It connects to Brug 868 using a retaining wall.
Dirk Sterenberg from the Dienst der Publieke Werken designed these three structures. They share a similar aesthetic. The castellated balustrades with relief detailing are particularly striking. Sterenberg incorporated this style into other bridges across the city. Brug 704 is one example of his distinctive touch.
Notice the shape of Brug 869. It forms a parallelogram. It angles across the pedestrian and bicycle path. The total length and width are approximately 16 meters. The clearance height stands at around 3 meters.
