Ready to discover a bridge that blends function with understated design? Brug 435 offers a glimpse into Amsterdam’s urban infrastructure. It is a bridge with a story beyond its practical purpose.

Brug 435 quietly connects the Von Guerickestraat and Rosendaalstraat. It spans the Fahrenheitsingel in Amsterdam-Oost. This concrete traffic bridge might seem like a simple underpass to some.

Designed by Piet Kramer, Brug 435 dates back to 1939 and 1940. Surprisingly, its design lacks the ornate details often associated with Kramer. You won’t find typical Amsterdam School features here. There are no elaborate artworks or decorative balustrades. Its simplicity speaks volumes.

Unofficially it was known as the Thermometerbrug until 2016. The name came from Gabriel Fahrenheit’s temperature scale. In July 2016, the city decided to move away from unofficial names. Residents were given a choice. They could make the unofficial name official. They could propose a new name. Or they could let the bridge remain anonymous. The last option was chosen. So Brug 435 it remains.

Imagine the bridge during the late 1930s. Cars were fewer. The pace of life was slower. People strolled across it taking in the surroundings. Today, it still serves its purpose. It facilitates the flow of traffic in Watergraafsmeer.

Brug 435 is a testament to functional design. It highlights how essential infrastructure can blend seamlessly into the urban landscape. Although not flashy, it is a vital part of Amsterdam’s transport network. Its story reminds us that even the most unassuming structures have a history. Next time you cross a bridge, think about Brug 435. Think about its quiet contribution to the city.
