Hidden in plain sight, Brug 19 whispers tales of resilience. This arch bridge, gracefully spanning the Blauwburgwal, is more than just a crossing. Brug 19 is a silent witness to Amsterdam’s ever-evolving story. The bridge we see today, completed in July 1977, is a relatively new addition to the cityscape. But don’t let its youth fool you. A bridge has existed at this very spot for centuries. Pieter Bast’s 1599 map, a time when the Herengracht served as the city’s outer defense, shows a bridge here. Balthasar Florisz. van Berckenrode’s 1625 map also marks its presence. Brug 19’s history intertwines with its neighbor, Brug 18. Artist Herman Misset’s work suggests Brug 19 once bore the year 1791 on its arch, though evidence remains elusive. Interestingly, other depictions from the late 19th century, including a photograph by Pieter Oosterhuis, reveal a different structure altogether: a girder bridge. This older Brug 19, along with Brug 18, narrowly escaped destruction during a bombing raid on May 11, 1940. The blast devastated the corner building at Blauwburgwal 25-27 and Herengracht 105-107, but the bridges survived. The current Brug 19 replaced this older structure, marking another chapter in its long history. So, next time you cross Brug 19, remember its hidden depths. It’s a testament to the enduring spirit of Amsterdam, a city constantly rebuilding and reinventing itself, while still holding onto the echoes of its past.
