“A simple wooden structure.” That’s how Brug 1731 began its life. It is a humble bridge in Amsterdam-Noord. It’s easy to overlook amid Amsterdam’s many grander bridges. But Brug 1731 has a story to tell.

Brug 1731 is a foot and bicycle bridge. It reflects Amsterdam’s ever-expanding nature. Picture this area decades ago. Until the 1960s, this was farmland. The Banne Buiksloot residential area arrived in the 1970s. This changed everything. The IJdoornlaan was extended. The Nieuwe Gouw and agricultural lands gave way to the city.

The 1980s brought more changes. Work began to connect the IJdoornlaan. It connected to the Ringweg-Noord further north. This ring road encircled the Banne Buiksloot neighborhood. The area around Sportpark Kadoelen was redeveloped. Besides the main route via Brug 1726, side connections were needed. These were for local foot and bicycle traffic.

Brug 1731 emerged as a solution. It is a simple wooden bridge. Along with Brug 1728, it created a connection. It linked the residential area near Voordek to the Kadoelen neighborhood. The bridge’s design was straightforward. A wooden span rested on three sets of bridge pillars. These had yokes. A wooden structure sat atop. It featured wooden beams, balustrades, and railings.

Two lampposts received special attention. They were mounted on the yokes. They stood outside the bridge structure. Amsterdam has dozens of similar bridges. But they weren’t always resistant to weathering.

By 2022, Brug 1731 had reached the end of its lifespan. Work began on a new set of bridges nearby. Amsterdam boasts around 1,900 bridges. Each bridge is assigned a unique number. This helps with city management. It also assists navigation. This system helps the City of Amsterdam and maintenance crews. They can quickly find information about a specific bridge.

Amsterdam’s bridges showcase the city’s growth. Wooden bridges gave way to concrete and iron. These materials are stronger and last longer. Bridges are more than crossings. They reveal Amsterdam’s transformation. It went from a small place to a major city.

Brug 1731 might be modest. Yet it plays a role in Amsterdam’s story. It connects neighborhoods. It supports daily life. It shows how Amsterdam evolves. The next time you cross a bridge, remember Brug 1731. Think about the history beneath your feet.
