Brother Konrad, originally named Johann Birndorfer, was born in a small village near Bad Griesbach in the Rottal region of Germany. He was a farmer’s son, destined to inherit his family’s land, but felt a profound calling towards a different path: a life of service dedicated to God.
At the young age of 31, he left the farm and entered the Capuchin monastery of St. Anna in nearby Altötting in 1849. The monks gave him the name Konrad. He served as the monastery’s porter for forty-one years. Brother Konrad was known for his deep faith, tireless work ethic, and gentle demeanor, and he was truly loved by the people who knew him. His life was dedicated to serving others.
However, it was not just his kindness that endeared him to the people. Brother Konrad was a man of deep prayer. The small cell beneath an old staircase was his retreat. He dedicated hours to prayer, seeking God’s guidance. This profound spirituality radiated from him. It attracted people from far and wide. They came to him for advice and comfort.
In 1930, Konrad of Parzham was beatified by Pope Pius XI. Four years later, in 1934, he was canonized as a saint.
