Dating back before the 15th century, the Broeker Kerk stands as the oldest structure in Broek in Waterland. It was once dedicated to Saint Nicholas. He is the patron saint of seafarers and merchants. Imagine Broek in Waterland thriving primarily on herring fishing.

The Broeker Kerk faced devastation during the Reformation. Spanish forces destroyed it in 1573. The building largely burned down. Rebuilding took many years. Waterland was left in poverty. The residents of Broek could only begin restoration years later. A section of the building was covered with a thatched roof. Church services could then resume. This milestone was celebrated in 1628 with a festive dedication service.

Sufficient funds for a proper reconstruction were gathered in the years following 1628. The Broeker Kerk gradually acquired its present form. The north aisle was completed in 1639. The tower followed in 1648. The round chancel from the Catholic era lost its function. The pulpit became the church’s focal point after the Reformation. It symbolized the central importance of ‘the word of God’.

The 18th century marked a period of prosperity for Broek in Waterland. Significant work was done on the Broeker Kerk again. Restoration work was carried out. Two entrance portals were added on either side of the church. The portal on the south side is the current main entrance. The tower was modified in 1727 and 1780. It acquired its present appearance.

Major restorations of the Broeker Kerk took place in 1950-1951 and 1986-1989. The foundation was reinforced with new pilings measuring 21 meters. During the latter restoration, the ceiling was thoroughly renovated. Painted angels were discovered beneath numerous layers of paint. This discovery surprised everyone.

Experts say the interior of the Broeker Kerk presents a complete and characteristic image. It shows the historical development of the church’s use. The interior largely dates from the 17th century. The south-side entrance portal serves as the main entrance today.

The Broeker Kerk’s acoustics are enchanting. It is a must for enthusiasts. Historical sounds resonate within these walls. The Broeker Kerk is more than just a building. It is a living testament to faith, resilience, and community. Its walls echo centuries of stories. It invites us to reflect on the passage of time. It reminds us of the enduring power of the human spirit.
