What secrets do these steel blocks hold? Right here, before us, stands Bretten Suite 10 / 20, part of a series of 20 sculptures by Herbert Nouwens. The Brettensuite interacts with the landscapes of the Brettenpad, a path stretching from Westerpark to the outskirts of Amsterdam. Nouwens positioned these sculptures, inspired by musical suites, like those of Bach. Bretten Suite 10 / 20 sits in front of the railway viaducts of Sloterdijk station. It’s a group of four steel block stacks, each about a man’s height, resting on light gray concrete slabs. They’re not uniform cubes, but stacks of two and three blocks, bringing to mind the mysterious figures of Easter Island. These stacks are heavy, each block compressing the weight of more than 70 people. The concrete slabs serve as a pedestal, uniting the stacks and giving Bretten Suite 10 / 20 its place. This placement contrasts with the oval pillars of the viaducts. The stacks, though appearing natural due to their irregularity, are undeniably man-made. From the side, the stacks form two rows, with the right row slightly ahead, as if in a subtle dance. The Bretten Suite 10 / 20 stands as a testament to the interplay of art and environment, a quiet counterpoint to the bustling city beyond. It invites us to contemplate the surprising harmony between industrial material and natural form.
