Beneath our feet lies a marvel of engineering. The Bosrandbrug stands as a testament to Amsterdam’s innovative spirit. It connects Aalsmeer to Schiphol-Oost over the Ringvaart. This bridge is more than just a crossing. It is a vital artery in the region’s transportation network.
The Bosrandbrug we see today is not the first. The original bridge emerged with the Bosrandweg. The road itself marked the edge of the Amsterdamse Bos. As the forest’s southwest section opened so did the road. Therefore the name reflects its location on the forest’s border.
In the early 2000s, the area shifted. The Aalsmeer part of Amsterdamse Bos joined Amstelveen. Now the road runs along the border between municipalities.
The current Bosrandbrug is a result of the Schiphol-Amstelveen project. This ambitious project from 2009 to 2016 improved regional infrastructure. The Provincial Road 201 was rerouted for a better connection. This connected the road to Rijksweg 9 via the Schipholdijk.
During the bridge’s construction from 2011 to 2012, crossing the Haarlemmermeer Ringvaart required a ferry. However, this inconvenience led to something special. Royal HaskoningDHV designed a unique double drawbridge. It’s hydraulically powered. This design improved traffic flow.
The Bosrandbrug has two spans. The southern span carries motorized traffic eastward. The northern span handles westbound vehicles. It also accommodates pedestrians and cyclists. The bridge opened to foot and cycle traffic in November 2012. Motorists had to wait until 2013 because of simultaneous work on the Schipholdijk fly-over. The fly-over prevents through traffic from waiting. This occurs when the Bosrandbrug opens.
The Bosrandbrug features advanced technology. It is remotely controlled from the nearby Schipholdraaibrug. This ensures efficient operation.
The steel structure has some clever details. All steel parts are aluminized. Also they meet the highest flatness standards. The bridge is mostly trouble-free. It features an intercom for ships, detection sensors, speakers, and cameras. These are cleverly combined into a single mast.
The Bosrandbrug offers a wider waterway. This enhances shipping capacity. The bridge contributes to the N201 ring road by separating local and through traffic. This improves overall accessibility.
