Nestled by the Amstel River, Bibliotheek Uithoorn is more than just a building. It’s the heart of this community. It’s a vibrant hub where stories come alive, knowledge is shared, and connections are forged. Bibliotheek Uithoorn officially opened its doors in July 2022 within the De Rede building. This modern library is a far cry from dusty shelves and hushed whispers. It is designed as a “third place,” a welcoming space between home and work, encouraging interaction and activity. The moment you step inside Bibliotheek Uithoorn, you are greeted by light and openness. A coffee bar invites you to linger with a book or newspaper. A massive, colorful bookcase wraps around the space, creating a warm, inviting atmosphere. Cozy nooks and comfortable armchairs offer quiet spaces for reading or work. Look closely, and you’ll see whimsical orange “cocoons” built into the bookshelves, each shaped like a miniature house, offering a unique and playful reading experience. The children’s area is a wonderland of large cushions and tiered platforms, perfect for little ones to explore. Bibliotheek Uithoorn also boasts a “makerspace” table for creative projects and a stage for community events and performances. Four separate meeting rooms are available for rent or use by local organizations. One such organization is the Taalhuis, which offers support with language, math, and digital skills. The design of Bibliotheek Uithoorn is inspired by its location on the Amstel River. Cool blue hues on the walls, especially in the children’s area where they are painted in abstract waves, evoke the flowing water and contrast beautifully with the overall warm color palette. The library aims to be a cultural hotspot. It offers a variety of activities like the BoekStart BabyCafés. These monthly events provide a relaxed environment for parents and babies to enjoy books together. For those wanting to improve their digital literacy, Digisterker courses teach essential skills like applying for a DigiD, requesting benefits, and navigating online government services. Bibliotheek Uithoorn even hosts a financial café to help residents with money matters. This community-focused library provides numerous resources and programs that make it an integral part of Uithoorn.
