Tucked away in Amsterdam, the Bianca Castafioreplein is a charming little space. It’s nestled between Verversstraat and the Zwanenburgwal canal. The Bianca Castafioreplein isn’t your typical grand square. It’s more of an accidental open area, a product of urban renewal. Interestingly, the Bianca Castafioreplein is not officially recognized. There’s a red street sign. Official Amsterdam street signs are blue. This quirky detail adds to the Bianca Castafioreplein’s unique charm. The square’s namesake, Bianca Castafiore, is the flamboyant opera singer from the Tintin comics. Thijs Janssen, a former resident of Verversstraat, came up with the name. The Bianca Castafioreplein has become a whimsical tribute to this beloved character. The west side of the Bianca Castafioreplein connects to Verversstraat, a pedestrian area. A low wall separates the two. From the Zwanenburgwal, you can reach the square through a gate near house number 152. Because it’s unofficial, the Bianca Castafioreplein doesn’t have any house numbers. But it does have a vibrant focal point. A bright yellow slide shaped like a friendly dragon stands proudly in the center. A small bird perches atop the dragon’s head, adding a touch of whimsy. The Bianca Castafioreplein embodies the unexpected delights hidden within Amsterdam’s urban landscape.
