In 1976, a spark ignited in the heart of Amsterdam Holendrecht. The Bevrijdingsmonument stands as a testament to that spark. It all began with Els Borsboom, a member of the local residents’ council. She proposed a commemoration for May 4th. Her idea resonated deeply within the newly formed community. Everyone was new to Holendrecht, carrying their own experiences from the turbulent years of 1940-1945. The interest in the commemoration grew. With it, a powerful need for a permanent symbol of remembrance emerged, a monument. The Bevrijdingsmonument became that symbol. Several artists submitted designs, mostly on paper. But Maria Glandorf presented a fully realized plan, complete with a model. The neighborhood commemoration committee commissioned her to create the Bevrijdingsmonument. The community rallied to fund the project. A rummage sale, featuring only new and high-quality items, was a resounding success. The Bevrijdingsmonument, a bronze sculpture on a square pedestal, depicts two human figures. It was unveiled in 1983. Ever since, it has served as the focal point for annual commemorations, a tangible reminder of the resilience and unity of the Holendrecht community. The Bevrijdingsmonument reminds us that remembrance is not just a duty, but a testament to the enduring human spirit.
