Welcome to a marvel of modern engineering. It is more than just a lock. The Betonsluis represents innovation in Amsterdam’s IJburg district.
In the early 21st century, Amsterdam sought durable materials. The city wanted cost-effective solutions for its waterways. The Betonsluis emerged as a pioneering project. Construction took place from 2009 to 2011.
The Betonsluis earned its nickname. It has unique concrete lock doors. These were a first for the Netherlands. The doors separate the inner waters of De Groene Tunnel and Hollandiagracht from the IJmeer.
These aren’t your average concrete slabs. Each door is made of high-strength concrete. It is reinforced with stainless steel fibers. They measure six meters long and 4.5 meters high. Each weighs about 14,000 kilograms. This construction was chosen for being more affordable than traditional steel or wood.
The Betonsluis doors move horizontally. They glide on a thin layer of water. This hydro-foot system reduces the energy needed to operate them.
