Whispers of royalty once graced the grounds of Bethlehemkerk. Queen Wilhelmina herself attended the inauguration of this Amsterdamse School gem in 1924. Bethlehemkerk isn’t just a church. It’s a testament to the architectural prowess of Adriaan Moen, commissioned by a group known as the “Association for Reformed District Interests North of the IJ”. They envisioned a house of worship that wouldn’t overshadow the surrounding homes. Bethlehemkerk stands at Zwanenplein, its design a harmonious blend of grandeur and intimacy. The church’s journey began in 1923, from the laying of the first stone by Miesje Stam, the preacher’s daughter, to its grand opening a year later. Initially nicknamed “Zwanenkerk” (Swan Church), the name felt too ordinary. It was later christened Bethlehemkerk, a name echoing a more profound significance. Imagine sitting in its pews, surrounded by H.J. Winkelman’s stained-glass windows depicting biblical scenes. The “Annunciation to the Shepherds” and the “Wise Men from the East” illuminate the space with vibrant colours. Notice the recurring snail shell motifs, a nod to the works of German zoologist and philosopher Ernst Haeckel. Bethlehemkerk’s story continued to evolve. In 1993, it ceased operation as a Reformed Church, passing through the hands of various religious communities. By 2015, it was no longer a church at all. Then, in 2017, a new chapter began. Studio 150 breathed new life into Bethlehemkerk, transforming it into a state-of-the-art recording studio. The meticulous restoration preserved the church’s exterior while adapting the interior for its new purpose. Today, Bethlehemkerk stands as a symbol of transformation, a place where the echoes of hymns now mingle with the melodies of contemporary music. From a house of prayer to a haven for musical creation, Bethlehemkerk continues to inspire.
