Consider Beth Haim. It is more than just a cemetery. It is a journey through time. Beth Haim means “House of Life” in Hebrew. Founded in 1614, Beth Haim is the oldest Jewish cemetery in the Netherlands. It is located in Ouderkerk aan de Amstel near Amsterdam.

For almost four centuries, this has been the final resting place for members of the Portuguese-Israelite community. Imagine the stories held within these grounds. The cemetery holds around 28000 graves.

Initially Amsterdam denied permission to build a Jewish cemetery. The community buried their dead 50 kilometers away. Finally in 1614 permission was granted. The community bought its first plot of land. More land was purchased in 1690 and 1691.

During the Dutch Golden Age, splendid marble memorial stones were placed here. These stones featured elaborate carvings and inscriptions. Beth Haim became the resting place for prominent rabbis, diplomats, and scientists. Rabbi Menashe ben Israel is buried here. He pleaded with Oliver Cromwell to allow Jews to settle in England. Eliahu Montalto’s tombstone is one of the most impressive. He was a physician to Maria de Medici. Jacob van Ruysdael even painted his grave.

Over time many tombstones sank into the ground. In the 19th century David Henriques de Castro restored part of Beth Haim. He cataloged and raised some tombstones. He used bricks to support the most beautiful ones. De Castro spent 14 years restoring the cemetery. He documented his work in a book which remains authoritative.

By 1923 Beth Haim was almost full. Jewish law forbids exhumation. So an old part of Beth Haim was covered with earth. This created more space. It was estimated this new area would last until 1963. However many community members died during the Second World War. There is sufficient space for the next 80 years.

In 1994 the Castro Fund was established. It raises funds for the preservation of Beth Haim. Beth Haim is being positioned as a historical and educational destination. It shows the history of Portuguese Jews in the Netherlands. The Beth Haim app offers tours highlighting Jewish history.

Many gravestones depict scenes from the past. They tell stories of lives, values, and beliefs. Inscriptions appear in Dutch, Portuguese, and Hebrew. These stones reveal the rich history of the Sephardi Jews.

The Rodeamentos House stands here. It is the caretaker’s house. It was built in 1705. The Rodeamentos House divides the old and new sections of the cemetery.

Beth Haim stands as a testament to a vibrant community. It shows their enduring legacy. As you wander here consider the lives. Think of the contributions made by those interred within Beth Haim.
