“What stories lie beneath these tranquil lawns?” I ask gesturing towards Begraafplaats West. This is more than just a final resting place. It’s a tapestry woven with threads of history, art, and remembrance.
Begraafplaats West opened its gates in 1971. Before that it was the Westerhof, a work in progress since 1963 in the Lutkemeerpolder. Hendrik Jan de Kimpe designed the grounds with a vision of peace.
Imagine this place in the late 1960s. Drainage systems were a primary concern. The construction included a pond for water processing. The grounds also have a ringwatersystem.
The cemetery is known for its spacious layout. There are large green lawns and wooded areas. Several ponds dot the landscape. These elements provide a serene backdrop for reflection.
Begraafplaats West is divided into sections. There are traditional grave plots and urn storage. Also you can find scattering fields. One notable area is the Ajax-veldje. It contains grass from the old Ajax stadium. Another is a field especially for the scattering of fetal remains.
A monument commemorates the Tenerife airplane disaster. This tragedy took 583 lives in 1977. Most of the 248 Dutch victims are buried here.
Westgaarde’s crematorium has four ovens installed in 2004. They can handle up to 32 cremations daily. Families can accompany their loved ones to the ovens.
The grounds include a mortuary and prayer space. These provide comfort and solace during difficult times.
Since 1997 Westgaarde has been a part of PC Uitvaart.
This cemetery is not just for mourning. It is part of a local cycling route. Cyclists pass through, experiencing its calm atmosphere.
Many prominent figures rest here. These include Norbert Elias the sociologist. Also Sylvia Millecam the actress is buried here. Conny Mus, the journalist, also found his final place here.
Many well-known Dutch figures have been cremated here. These include the singer Willy Alberti. The writer Simon Carmiggelt was cremated here. Also the famous singer André Hazes.
Art punctuates the landscape. Sculptures dot the grounds. The statue Charlotte gazes over the central pond. Other works include “Gevleugeld paard”. Also there is a “Tulpmonument”.
Begraafplaats West offers a space for reflection. It reminds us of life’s fleeting nature. It is a place to honor those who came before us.
