Seven graves. Seventeen souls. That’s all that remains of the old Roman Catholic church of Osdorp. This is Begraafplaats Oud-Osdorp. It stands quietly here a remnant of a village long gone.

Begraafplaats Oud-Osdorp is more than just a graveyard. It’s a poignant piece of Amsterdam’s history. It tells a story of faith perseverance and a village swallowed by the city’s growth. The original church dedicated to Saint Pancratius was built in 1650. This was after the Catholics were driven from the church in Sloten. Think of the hardships they endured. The constant struggle for a place to worship.

The church stood near a bend in the Osdorperweg. It stood near the spot where we stand now. Imagine the community it served. The lives lived nearby. The church suffered damage in 1836. A storm destroyed its tower. The Haarlemmermeer flooded the village. The church was eventually demolished in 1901. It had sunk too much. It was beyond repair.

But even in its decay the Begraafplaats Oud-Osdorp perseveres. It holds the graves of notable figures. ZECornelis Ruigrok rests here his life spanning from 1824 to 1898. Christina and Gerardus Verbruggen share a grave. Their lives ended in 1912. Even a simple headstone bears witness. It whispers a prayer: “Mijn Jezus Barmhartigheid”. And the remnants of the old church remain.

A monument close by remembers a different kind of loss. It honors those who fell in World War II. Petrus Franciscus Bierman died in Oegstgeest on the first day of the war. Jan Kars gave his life in the liberation of Zeeuws-Vlaanderen in 1944. There’s even a memorial tile for an American pilot. 2nd Lieutenant Dover Chalmond Fleming Jr. His P-47 Thunderbolt crashed nearby in 1943.

The Begraafplaats Oud-Osdorp is a place of reflection. It’s a reminder that even in the face of loss and change life continues. The stories of this little graveyard are woven into the very fabric of Amsterdam’s history. This quiet corner speaks volumes about faith resilience and the passage of time. It speaks of people’s lives. It is a place of peace. It is Begraafplaats Oud-Osdorp.
