Behold, a mythical creature frozen in stone awaits us here. This is “Het Beest” or “The Beast”. This sculpture is in Eendrachtspark. It resides in the Geuzenveld-Slotermeer area of Amsterdam.

Nel van Lith created “The Beast”. She finished it in 1974. The sculpture is made of Travertine stone.

“The Beast” appears to be a mythical being. It seems half human and half animal. Look closely. Can you make out an animal with horns? It carries four figures on its back.

Van Lith created both figurative and abstract sculptures. She worked with stone and bronze. Van Lith studied at the Rijksakademie voor Beeldende Kunsten in Amsterdam. She was a student of Piet Esser. Her works are in several Dutch municipalities. You can also find them in museum collections. These include the Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam. Also the Kröller-Müller Museum in Otterlo and Museum Beelden aan Zee in Scheveningen.

Besides “The Beast”, Van Lith also created a bronze bust. It depicted Queen Beatrix. She made it for the Amsterdam Medical Center in 1984. Talent ran in her family. Her father was Hubert van Lith. His sculpture “Het bruispaar” is on display at the Osdorperban in Nieuw-West.
