Have you ever seen a bench so long it could tell a story? Here at Houthavenpark, the Bankje Burgemeester Maarschalk stretches 170 meters. It’s not just a place to rest, but a testament to design and engineering. Bankje Burgemeester Maarschalk is constructed from laser-cut steel plates. It’s divided into four sections. The first part, already installed, measures 20 meters. The design appears simple, yet the creation process was complex. The bench’s back subtly shifts. It starts behind the front, levels at seating height, and then disappears again. This creates a dynamic visual pattern. Each yellow support piece under the bench is unique. These pieces accommodate the uneven concrete blocks beneath. The designers meticulously measured the blocks twice. This ensured the bench sits flat despite the height and tilt differences. Even the ends of Bankje Burgemeester Maarschalk are special. They smoothly transition, becoming smaller and wider. The design exists as a complex Grasshopper script. This script, with over 5,000 components, generates every detail. It even accounts for how the steel bends during construction. Generating the 2D production drawings from this script proved even more challenging than the 3D model. Some calculations for the longest sections took around 20 minutes to complete. This bench, designed by Studio Wessels Boer, is more than just a resting spot. It’s a fusion of art, engineering, and a touch of Amsterdam’s unique character.
