225 tires. Can you imagine that? This isn’t just any pile of old rubber. This is the Bandenboot. Right here in front of you is a unique art installation a playful yet profound piece of Amsterdam’s history.

The Bandenboot is more than just a collection of tires. It’s a testament to the creativity of Robert Jasper Grootveld a Dutch artist and activist. He conceived it in 1974 originally as a children’s playground. The Amsterdam municipality commissioned it. Imagine kids climbing and playing among these 225 tires all linked together by chains.

But the Bandenboot’s journey wasn’t smooth sailing. It was initially located in Wittenburg. Then it moved to a field near Oostenburgerdwarsstraat. This field was nicknamed “het Grootveld” at the time. But in 2008 Dutch authorities deemed it unsafe as a toy. This led to its removal in 2009.

For a few years the Bandenboot sat unused. Then in 2012 it found a new home. Here it is. In the waters of the Wittenburgervaart next to the Ezelsbrug. It’s not just a playground anymore it’s a quirky landmark. A symbol of Grootveld’s rebellious spirit. A quirky monument in the heart of Amsterdam.

Grootveld wasn’t just about the Bandenboot. He was a prolific boat builder. He created other vessels from reclaimed materials. One was the “Magic Ship” also called “Phrya”. He built it in his own yard on the Eastern Islands. Ironically this boat which the municipal cleaning service recognized as art was dismantled when the staff were on holiday. Another boat “Tand des Tijds” was even banned by the mayor. It was meant to be towed to Friesland but tragically capsized.

The Bandenboot though? It persevered. It stands as a reminder of Grootveld’s legacy. A symbol of resourcefulness. A symbol of artistic expression. A strangely charming floating sculpture. It’s one of a kind. It’s the Bandenboot a true Amsterdam original.
