“Baanbrug,” a simple name. But what stories does this bridge hold? The Baanbrug is more than just a way to cross the Lijnbaansgracht. It’s a fixed bridge located in the Elandsgracht in Amsterdam-Centrum. The Baanbrug is also known as Bridge 107.

Perhaps you’re wondering about the origins of the Baanbrug. Plans for this bridge emerged around 1890. The city wanted to construct a wide access road by reclaiming the Elandsgracht. This required a bridge over the Singelgracht, the Oude Kinkerbrug. The construction was tendered in 1891. By May 1892, the iron girders were in place. Traffic began crossing the Baanbrug in August 1892.

Now, imagine Amsterdam in the late 19th century. The Baanbrug connected people and goods. It facilitated Amsterdam’s growth. In 1967, the Baanbrug underwent a temporary widening. Iron and wood bridges were added on both sides. These new bridges created footpaths. The roadway was also widened at this time. Wooden balustrades were added. They were placed outside the original wrought iron ones.

Consider how opinions change over time. During the 1960s, old iron bridges were not valued as monuments. Many were replaced or rebuilt on a large scale. By 2004, the Baanbrug faced another challenge. There were plans to excavate the Elandsgracht again. The bridge would then become an obstacle. Adjustments to the area were deemed necessary. The Marnixstraat and Elandsgracht crossing was a dangerous spot. There was even talk of building a parking garage beneath the Elandsgracht.

However, attitudes shifted once more in the 21st century. Now, there’s a strong desire to preserve these bridges. For the Baanbrug, this meant restoring it to its original form and style. The Baanbrug has natural stone pylons and its original width. After eleven months of work, the restored bridge reopened on December 23, 2011.

Today, it’s hard to imagine the Baanbrug looking any different. This bridge has transformed over the years. It has adapted to Amsterdam’s changing needs and tastes. The Baanbrug stands as a testament to Amsterdam’s history. The Baanbrug also highlights the city’s commitment to preserving its heritage. Take a moment to appreciate the Baanbrug. It is not just a bridge. It is a symbol of Amsterdam’s enduring spirit.
