Is this where hope found a home amidst the echoes of history? Right here, in the suburb of Neustift, stands the Auferstehung Christi church, a beacon of faith and resilience. The Auferstehung Christi church, whose name translates to “Resurrection of Christ,” already hints at the spirit it embodies.

Built in 1960, the Auferstehung Christi church emerged from the ashes of war, a testament to the indomitable spirit of the people. It replaced a modest “emergency church” erected just a few decades earlier to serve the burgeoning population of Neustift. Imagine the joy and gratitude as the congregation, many of whom were likely displaced after the war, finally had a proper place of worship.

The architecture of Auferstehung Christi church is a fascinating blend of modern and traditional elements. You see, instead of a traditional long nave, the church embraces a semi-circular design, focusing attention on the altar. Above you hangs a massive, striking altarpiece crafted from African Abachi wood. It depicts the suffering of Christ, a poignant reminder of the church’s name and its message of hope and renewal.

But there’s a delightful twist to this tale. The construction of the church faced a major hurdle – the cost of a steel framework for the heavy concrete ceiling was simply too high. It was a local Passau firm, Capellaro, that came up with an ingenious solution. They decided to use wood. Over 300 tree trunks, sourced locally from the nearby Bavarian Forest, were used to create a sturdy and cost-effective framework, a testament to the resourcefulness of the community. Even today, the Auferstehung Christi church stands as a symbol of resilience, faith, and the power of community.
