Stolen. That’s how the story of the Apollo Offering Statue begins. In 1993 a Minerva statue disappeared. It vanished from its pedestal. This left a void a gap in Amsterdam’s artistic landscape. Then in 1994 something remarkable happened. The Apollo Offering Statue arrived. A gift. A generous offering from the French artist Arman to the city of Amsterdam. It stands proudly now at the corner of Apollolaan and Minervalaan. A replacement a symbol of renewal.

The Apollo Offering Statue is more than just bronze. It’s a testament to resilience. It shows the city’s capacity to overcome loss. Arman’s work is unique. The bronze figure of the Greek god Apollo is sliced into three vertical sections. This isn’t mere damage. It’s intentional. It’s Arman’s signature style. He was known for his ‘Coupes’ works. These are objects deliberately cut into pieces. He also created ‘Coleres’ pieces that were smashed and ‘Combustions’ which were burned. Arman’s art often involved a mix of techniques. He welded painted split and assembled his creations. Many of his works were large.

The story of the Apollo Offering Statue extends beyond its artistic merit. It’s interwoven with the history of a sculpture exhibition. The 1994 Biennale Sculpture exhibition featured over one hundred works. It showcased international artists including Lynn Chadwick Karel Appel and Niki de Saint Phalle. Many Dutch sculptors also participated. Sadly a sequel never materialized. Lack of funding meant there was no second exhibition. The municipality failed to provide support. There was no catalog produced.

Arman himself is an intriguing figure. He was inspired by Van Gogh. He chose to sign his early work only as ‘Armand’. A printing error later led to the name ‘Arman’. This became his artist’s name. He embraced it.

The Apollo Offering Statue isn’t just a sculpture. It is a story of loss and replacement. It’s a symbol of Amsterdam’s artistic spirit. It reflects the bold style of Arman a master of mixed media. The statue stands as a permanent reminder. It’s a symbol of a city’s resilience its artistic heart beating strong. Look closely. Notice the way the light plays on the bronze. See the subtle shadows in the cuts. This is not just a statue. It is living art. A conversation with the past a promise for the future.
