Have you ever dined with monkeys? At the Apentafel Installation in Amsterdam’s Westerpark, you can almost feel like you are. This whimsical artwork, created by Merijn Bolink in 2005, is more than just a sculpture. It’s a meeting place, a community hub, the first of four planned “art tables” commissioned by the Westerpark district. The Apentafel is a playful bronze table surrounded by, you guessed it, monkeys! These cheeky primates seem caught mid-frolic, clambering over the table, some even hanging upside down. The Apentafel Installation invites you to join the fun. It’s a place to gather, chat with neighbors, and let your imagination run wild. The artist, Merijn Bolink, born in 1967, specializes in creating interactive public art. He wanted the Apentafel to be a lively part of the community, not just something to be admired from afar. Located in the Zoutkeetsplein, the Apentafel serves its purpose well. It has become a beloved local gathering spot. While the monkeys might not actually join you for a meal, they certainly add a unique flavor to the Westerpark experience.
