Picture the Anton Jolingbrug a steadfast bridge connecting the Oude Leliestraat and the Leliegracht’s northern bank. It spans the Herengracht a vital artery of Amsterdam. This isn’t just any bridge. For centuries a bridge has stood here. Balthasar Florisz van Berckenrode’s 1625 map shows a five-arched structure. The Anton Jolingbrug you see today is a product of later modernization.

The Anton Jolingbrug’s modern history began in 1886. Decreasing ship traffic and increasing road traffic prompted the city to consider lowering and widening the bridge. Amsterdam faced budget constraints. The decision to upgrade this bridge meant less money for other bridges in need of repair. Despite this the project to lower and widen the Anton Jolingbrug commenced. Emergency bridges were built in July 1886 while the old structure was demolished. Bridge 21 underwent a similar transformation. By early 1887 the project was finished.

The Anton Jolingbrug remained largely unchanged until 1962. Then the bridge deck was renewed in consultation with bridge architect Dirk Sterenberg. The bridge became a municipal monument on October 10 1995. It sits among other municipal and national monuments. In 2016/2017 a very special event occurred. The bridge was renamed in honor of architect Anton J Joling. This was at the request of the foundation managing his legacy. Anton Joling designed many significant Amsterdam buildings. His work includes the Peek & Cloppenburg building on Dam Square.

The Anton Jolingbrug is more than just a way to cross the canal. It is a testament to Amsterdam’s rich history. It’s a connection between the past and the present. Each brick each arch holds centuries of stories. The next time you cross the Anton Jolingbrug pause. Reflect on the bridge’s long journey through time. Appreciate its role in Amsterdam’s vibrant tapestry.
