Here stands the Anton de Kom statue a powerful bronze figure. It commemorates a Surinamese writer and activist. Anton de Kom fought against injustice. He fought against colonialism in Surinam. He fought against the Nazis in the Netherlands. His life was a relentless battle for freedom.

Born in 1898 the son of a former slave De Kom’s early life was shaped by oppression. He witnessed firsthand the harsh realities of colonial rule. He educated himself working for various companies. He became politically active joining left-wing organizations. He championed the cause of Surinamese independence.

His outspoken activism led to his arrest in Surinam in 1933. A protest erupted. Two people died. De Kom was exiled to the Netherlands. He didn’t stop fighting. He wrote “We Slaves of Surinam” a searing indictment of colonial brutality. The book became a bestseller years later in 2020. It is still read today.

During World War II De Kom joined the Dutch Resistance. He wrote for an underground newspaper. He risked his life to oppose the Nazi occupation. He was eventually captured and died of tuberculosis in a German concentration camp in 1945. He was posthumously awarded the Dutch Cross of Resistance.

This statue is more than just a monument. It represents De Kom’s unwavering spirit. It symbolizes his courage in the face of adversity. It reminds us of the ongoing struggle against oppression. It’s made from a gele kabbes tree. This tree came from Surinam. The artist Jikke van Loon sculpted it in 2006. The statue caused controversy. Some criticized its nudity. Others questioned a white artist portraying a Black hero.

This statue stands as a testament to Anton de Kom’s legacy. He was a powerful voice for the oppressed. He continues to inspire generations. His life and work resonate deeply. They challenge us to fight for justice. They remind us of the importance of freedom and equality. His legacy endures. His story is a reminder of courage. His struggle inspires. This statue is a place of reflection. A place to remember a hero. Look closely. See the strength. Feel the spirit. Anton de Kom lives on.
