How about this for a flight fact? Amsterdam Airport Schiphol served 66.8 million travelers in 2024. That’s an impressive +8% rise year-on-year. Welcome to Amsterdam Airport Schiphol.

This isn’t just an airport. It is a crucial hub connecting the Netherlands to the world. Schiphol Airport has a rich history. It began as a military airbase on September 16, 1916.

Schiphol’s name has interesting possible origins. One theory suggests “Schiphol” meant a graveyard for ships. The Haarlemmermeer was once a large lake. Sudden storms caused many ships to sink. Another explanation is “ship-haul”. Ships were towed from one water body to another here. A third origin is “schip hol” which means a low-lying area where wood for ships was obtained.

Initially, Schiphol Airport served a military purpose. Civilian aircraft started using it in 1920. By 1940, Schiphol had four asphalt runways. These runways were at 45-degree angles. The German military captured Schiphol in the same year. They renamed it Fliegerhorst Schiphol. The airport suffered heavy bombing. The airfield was rebuilt after the war and became the primary airport of the Netherlands in 1949.

Schiphol continues to expand. It has a single-terminal concept, split into three departure halls. The piers and concourses connect, allowing easy movement. Schiphol has approximately 223 boarding gates. Some gates have double jetways for wide-body aircraft. Emirates was the first airline to fly the A380 to Schiphol.

Schiphol Airport boasts impressive connectivity. In 2024, it served 301 destinations. 124 of them were intercontinental routes. Schiphol ranked as the second-best-connected airport in Europe. It was fifth globally according to the ACI Airport Industry Connectivity Report 2024.

Schiphol also excels in cargo operations. In 2024, cargo volumes increased by 8%. They reached 1.49 million tonnes. This is 10% above 2019 levels. The top five destination markets by passenger volume were the UK, Spain, Italy, the USA, and Turkey.

Schiphol has faced challenges too. In 2005, a diamond robbery occurred. The estimated value was around 75 million euros. Later that year, a fire at the detention center killed 11 people. In 2022, the airport experienced long delays and flight cancellations due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Amsterdam Airport Schiphol is more than just a place to catch a flight. It is a vital part of Dutch infrastructure and a key player in global aviation. From its humble beginnings as a military airfield to its current status as a leading international airport, Schiphol has continuously evolved.
