How about we step into a story that begins with a simple bend? That bend is in the river Amstel. Here, we find Amstelhoek a village with a history shaped by waterways and faith.

Amstelhoek is a village in the Dutch province of Utrecht. It lies in the municipality of De Ronde Venen. The village sits about 3 km northwest of Mijdrecht. Amstelhoek lies on the Amstel River. It’s directly across from Uithoorn.

Originally, the area was known as Mennonietenbuurt. This translates to Mennonite corner. A Mennonite church once stood here. It gave the area its unique name. The Mennonites left around 1800. In 1804, they sold their land and church to Protestants.

The name Amstelhoek first appeared in 1936. It aptly means corner of the Amstel River. The name was inspired by a fortress nearby. This fortress played a role in the area’s identity. A bridge built in 1636 spurred the village’s initial growth.

Imagine Amstelhoek in the late 19th century. Between 1885 and 1895, two large forts arose near the village. They became part of the Stelling van Amsterdam. This defensive line aimed to protect Amsterdam. One fort was named Fort bij Amstelhoek.

In 1840, Amstelhoek was home to just 187 people. Today, the village has grown. In 2023, Amstelhoek had 995 residents. It is a small yet vibrant community.

The Kruiskerk is a notable landmark. It showcases the Amsterdam School’s expressionistic style. B.W. Plooij designed it in 1926. Its tower features a slightly bulbous roof. The stained-glass windows are still in good condition. The church no longer serves its original purpose. It was converted into a living space in 2004.

The Amstel River itself has ancient roots. Around 1050 BC, it formed from a freshwater river. It cut into a tidal channel of the IJ. This connection to the water shaped the region’s development. The river’s name comes from Amestelle. This means water and solid ground.

Amstelhoek stands as a testament to history. From its religious roots to its strategic importance, the village embodies the spirit of the Dutch landscape. Its story, like the Amstel River, continues to flow.
