Gazing upon the Amphitrite, Neptunus en Arion Sculpture, one might hear whispers of ancient myths. The Amphitrite, Neptunus en Arion Sculpture, nestled within Park Frankendael in Amsterdam-Oost, isn’t just a static artwork. It’s a fountain, a storyteller, a portal to a time when gods and goddesses roamed the seas. Crafted in 1710 by Ignatius van Logteren, the Amphitrite, Neptunus en Arion Sculpture originally graced the Buitenplaats Driemond estate. Around 1770, it found its new home in Frankendael, another beautiful buitenplaats. The sculpture depicts Neptune, Amphitrite, and Arion in a dynamic tableau. Amphitrite reclines gracefully, her hand resting on a pitcher, a trident held loosely in the other. Neptune mirrors her pose on the opposite side, also with a pitcher and trident. Between them, a bell-shaped structure adorned with shells rises from the base. Perched atop a dolphin in front of the shells sits Arion with his lyre. The dolphin, you see, saved the musician Arion from drowning. The three figures serve as waterspouts, representing the three rivers near the original Driemond estate. Neptune represents the Gaasp, Amphitrite the Gein, and Arion the Smal Weesp. Water flows from these figures into a shell-shaped basin below. This basin is cleverly mirrored by a curved recess in the opposite bank of the surrounding moat, creating a visual echo. The Amphitrite, Neptunus en Arion Sculpture is more than just a beautiful artwork. It’s a testament to the enduring power of mythology, a reminder of the stories that shaped our world. It’s a piece of history, brought to life by the gentle flow of water and the artistry of Ignatius van Logteren.
