Over there stands the Aluminiumbrug a marvel of engineering. This isn’t just any bridge. It’s bridge number 222 in Amsterdam. It’s a vital link connecting the Nieuwe Doelenstraat and Staalstraat spanning the Kloveniersburgwal.

The Aluminiumbrug boasts a rich history. A bridge has stood here for centuries. Pieter Bast depicted a wooden bridge in its place on his 1599 city map. Balthasar Florisz van Berckenrode’s 1625 map shows the same design a wooden bridge with a movable center section. This original bridge was replaced several times.

In 1896 an iron lifting bridge replaced the older double bascule bridge. City architect Adriaan Willem Weissman worked on this project. By 1936 the bridge needed repairs. A full deck replacement was necessary briefly halting traffic.

The Aluminiumbrug’s modern iteration arose from a need for improvement. In 1955 the old bridge was so rusty it was dangerous. A bold decision was made. The bridge deck would be made of aluminum. This was a first for the Netherlands saving approximately 130000 guilders. Work began on August 29 1955. The bridge was widened from 740 meters to 860 meters. The aluminum deck weighed only 10 tons. It was five times stronger than the steel deck it replaced.

Today the Aluminiumbrug stands as a testament to innovation. The lightweight aluminum deck was groundbreaking for its time. While no longer operational as a lifting bridge it remains a significant landmark. Ironically the Aluminiumbrug now faces a new challenge. Tourists attach heavy love locks. This threatens its relatively delicate structure.

The Aluminiumbrug’s story is one of resilience and change. It embodies Amsterdam’s enduring spirit. From a humble wooden structure to a pioneering aluminum bridge it has shaped the city’s landscape for centuries. It continues to connect people and history.
