You’re standing right in front of the Allies – Churchill-Roosevelt statue. It’s on New Bond Street, a gift to London from the Bond Street Association. The statue was unveiled in 1995, marking 50 years of peace after World War II. This wasn’t some grand, imposing monument; it was a small, intimate piece of public art. You see Winston Churchill and Franklin D. Roosevelt sitting on a bench, deep in conversation. Holofcener, the sculptor, really captured the two men’s personalities. Churchill has his trademark cigar. Roosevelt has his cigarette holder. They’re smiling, chatting. It’s a reminder of the strong relationship they built during the war. Did you know that Roosevelt, despite his famous wartime leadership, was actually disabled? He had polio and used leg braces and a wheelchair for his mobility. The statue does a good job of capturing Roosevelt as he wanted to be seen: as an ordinary man, enjoying a moment with a friend.
