The Roehampton War Memorial stands as a solemn sentinel. It reminds us of the sacrifices made during the World Wars. This memorial, crafted from limestone, specifically commemorates the men and women of Roehampton who bravely served their nation. The memorial’s inscription speaks volumes: “In honour of / the men of / Roehampton / who fought / and died in / the Great War / 1914-1918”. This inscription is meticulously etched onto seven sides of the memorial’s base. Interestingly, you won’t find individual names engraved here. These names are preserved in the village churches. Sadly, the Roehampton War Memorial bears the scars of conflict itself. It was destroyed by enemy action in 1941, a poignant reminder of the war’s far-reaching impact. Thankfully, it was restored in 1952 and stands today as a testament to the enduring spirit of remembrance.
