Ever wondered where Amsterdam’s trash ends up? Right here at Afvalenergiecentrale Westpoort. This impressive waste-to-energy plant plays a crucial role in keeping Amsterdam clean and powering homes.
Let’s step back in time. 150 years ago, Amsterdam was not the sweet-smelling city we know today. Household waste often ended up in canals. In 1877, the Dienst Stadsreiniging was established to combat this. They were dedicated to keeping the city clean.
Initially, all waste was landfilled. These dumps became a nuisance. The city council planned to dump waste in the Naardermeer lake in the early 20th century. This was met with heavy protests. The council relented and decided to build a waste incineration plant in Amsterdam-Noord in 1913.
The first fires burned in 1918. Barges brought waste through the canals for incineration. Nearly half a century later, environmental requirements grew stricter. The incineration plant could not handle the waste volume increase. In 1969, a new waste processing plant was built in Amsterdam-Noord. It was twice the size and much more efficient. For the first time, flue emissions were treated with an electrofilter.
In 1987, the city council decided to build a third-generation waste incineration plant in Amsterdam-Westpoort. This was the Waste-to-Energy plant, or W2E. It was a huge leap in capacity, technology, and sustainability. Commissioned in 1993, it was the first plant to eliminate dioxin emissions.
Needing even greater incineration capacity, the city built a fourth-generation plant. The High-Efficiency power plant, or HE, was completed in 2007. It used state-of-the-art technology. The HE plant reached an electrical efficiency level of 30%. Together, the W2E and HE plants can process 1.4 million tons of waste yearly.
In the same year construction started on the HE power plant, the Gemeentelijke Dienst Afvalwerking became Afval Energie Bedrijf. This highlighted the energy generated from waste. In 2014, the company was renamed AEB Amsterdam, with the City of Amsterdam as its sole shareholder.
But here’s a lesser-known fact. Although initially profitable, high costs and equipment breakdowns led to financial questions. In 2019, some plant lines were stopped, causing a crisis in waste disposal and energy generation. Despite resuming full capacity, privatization was considered.
In 2017, AEB built a separation plant. It separates metals, plastics, and paper from household waste. This contributes to a circular society. Raw materials are reused, and residual waste generates heat and electricity.
Today, Afvalenergiecentrale Westpoort stands as a testament to innovation. It shows how we can transform waste into a valuable resource. Of each tonne of waste, approximately 628 kWh of electricity and 208 kWh of heat are generated. This is supplied to the electricity grid. It also heats approximately 30,000 homes in the North of Amsterdam.
