Wondering what these two winding arms reaching for the sky represent? This is the 100 jaar Noordzeekanaal Sculpture. It commemorates a century of the North Sea Canal. Let’s dive into the story behind this striking piece.

The 100 jaar Noordzeekanaal Sculpture was created in 1975. It stands as a tribute to the North Sea Canal’s centennial. However, it wasn’t unveiled until November 1, 1977. Drs J Reehorst, a former chairman, did the honors. He led the central committee celebrating 100 years of the Noordzeekanaal and IJmuiden.

The sculpture is the work of Leonardus Petrus Paulus Pennock. The locals have a fond nickname for it. They call it “de tuimelaars” or “the tumblers”. The two arms gracefully turn with the wind. They offer a dynamic display.

Originally, the 100 jaar Noordzeekanaal Sculpture was a two-part artwork. It formed a gateway on either side of the road. But the construction of apartments changed things. The eastern part of the sculpture was removed.

The North Sea Canal itself has a rich history. Constructed between 1865 and 1876, it allows seafaring vessels to reach Amsterdam. Before its construction, the North Holland Canal served this purpose. However, it proved too narrow for the growing traffic. A decision was made to dig a new canal. This new route would be the shortest path to the sea.

Interestingly, no Dutch company wanted to undertake the canal’s construction. So, an English contractor was awarded the project. The canal was dug through the old IJ Bay. Dikes were added. The remaining parts of the IJ Bay were reclaimed. These became polders.

Nine auxiliary canals were also dug. These side canals managed the drainage. They also facilitated shipping on the tributaries of the IJ. On November 1, 1876, King William III officially opened the North Sea Canal.

Over the years, the canal has undergone widening and deepening projects. It remains a vital waterway. The 100 jaar Noordzeekanaal Sculpture serves as a reminder. It is a reminder of the canal’s impact. It is a reminder of its history. The artwork was restored in 1999 and again in 2011. This ensures that this landmark will be preserved. It will continue to turn in the wind for years to come.
