Have you ever stepped into a place where history whispers from the walls? The Gasthaus zum Hoffragner is such a place. Right here in Passau’s Old Town stands this traditional inn a testament to centuries of stories.

The Gasthaus zum Hoffragner boasts a rich past. Its four-story building with a hipped roof and horizontal facade rose again after the devastating city fires of 1680. It was even expanded in 1829. The name itself holds a secret. It refers to a privileged “Fragner” a type of shopkeeper who enjoyed special rights. This special right attached to the building. It couldn’t be sold separately from the Gasthaus itself since 1814.

Further changes reshaped the Gasthaus in 1881 and 1883. In 1906 brewery owner Eduard Ferdinand II Peschl took ownership. The Gasthaus faced closure in 1979. It underwent renovations inside in 1982. It reopened soon after. Another renovation followed in 1997.

For twenty years Barbara Lederer and Gernot Plitz ran the Gasthaus. He was a musician and visual artist. They created a vibrant atmosphere. Every first and third Thursday live jazz filled the air. Entry was always free. Sadly they closed the Gasthaus at the end of January 2024. Since then the Gasthaus has been closed. It’s a reminder that even the most cherished places have their seasons. But the Gasthaus zum Hoffragner’s story remains. It’s a tale of resilience. It is a story of community a story etched into the very bricks of its walls. It is waiting to be rediscovered. This is more than just a building. It is a living memory. The Gasthaus zum Hoffragner’s legacy remains strong. It promises to endure in Passau’s heart.
