High above Passau stands the Stephankreuz a towering testament to history. Its six-meter height commands attention. It’s more than just a cross. It’s a symbol. A poignant reminder of the 1956 Hungarian uprising. A bloody struggle for freedom brutally crushed by Soviet forces.

The Stephankreuz didn’t always stand there. Before it was a memorial to the Hungarian people. It was something else entirely. Before 1957 the site held the Schlageter-Kreuz. A monument to Albert Leo Schlageter. A Nazi convicted of sabotage during the Ruhr Occupation.

The Schlageter-Kreuz was a focal point. SA SS HJ BdM and Jungvolk held rallies there. It was a symbol of a dark chapter in German history. But times changed. The old cross became an offense. A jarring reminder of a regime the people wanted to forget.

Then came November 1956. The news from Hungary shocked the world. Passau’s people felt a deep connection to Hungary. They held a candlelight procession to show their solidarity. Their grief fueled the change. The old cross came down.

In its place rose the Stephankreuz. Erected by Catholic youth on June 15 1957. It was dedicated by Bishop Simon Konrad Landersdorfer. The name Stephankreuz is a tribute to Saint Stephen. Hungary’s first Christian king. His wife Gisela was buried in Niedernburg Passau. This connection is why some call it the Ungarnkreuz the Hungarian Cross.

The Stephankreuz isn’t just a memorial. It’s a bridge. Connecting Passau’s past to its present. A symbol of solidarity across borders and time. A symbol of hope. A reminder that even in the face of oppression the spirit of freedom endures.

Sadly the memorial’s inscription was stolen in 2010. It was recovered and replaced in 2012. The Stephankreuz stands firm. A beacon of remembrance. A symbol of defiance. A testament to the enduring spirit of hope. A lasting tribute to the sacrifices made in the fight for freedom. Look upon the Stephankreuz. Reflect on its history. Let its message resonate within you.
