Across the rolling hills of the Neuburger Wald, nestled amongst the trees, lies the quaint village of Altenmarkt. How did this meticulously planned settlement come to be? Altenmarkt’s story begins between 1523 and 1674. It was established by the Counts of Neuburg, leaving their mark on this quiet corner of Bavaria. The very name, Altenmarkt, whispers of its origins. In the records of 1674, it’s referred to as “Mark,” meaning boundary, a nod to its location on the edge of the county’s territory. Before becoming part of Fürstenzell in 1972, Altenmarkt stood as an independent community, charting its own course through history. Originally, Altenmarkt fell under the jurisdiction of the Steinharrer Amt and the Obmannschaft Rehschaln within the County of Neuburg until 1805. Later, the Steuerdistrikt of Altenmarkt evolved into a municipality bearing the same name. In 1838, it became part of the newly organized Landgericht Passau II. Over the years, Altenmarkt’s boundaries shifted. In 1957, the small settlement of Edlwagner joined Altenmarkt from Fürstenzell. Further changes came in 1969, as smaller hamlets and farmsteads were reassigned to different administrative areas within the municipality. Some, like Lamplmann and Schiffbauer, became part of Altenmarkt itself. Today, Altenmarkt rests peacefully as a district of Fürstenzell, its history woven into the fabric of the larger community. As you wander through its streets, imagine the generations who lived here, shaped by the ebb and flow of time.
