Could a simple shard of pottery unlock the secrets of Tiefenbach? This unassuming artifact, unearthed in Ritzing, whispers tales from the Neolithic era, over 6,000 years ago. It belonged to the Oberlauterbach culture, a group whose presence here predates recorded history. Tiefenbach’s story continues with a more substantial discovery in Götzing. Stone tools and the fragment of a ceremonial axe suggest a bustling Stone Age encampment. The strategic hilltop location and the nearby Gaißa River likely drew these early inhabitants. Tiefenbach’s connection to the Roman Empire remains a tantalizing mystery. Three Roman coins, dating back to the 3rd and 4th centuries AD, hint at possible Roman expeditions crossing the Danube. Tiefenbach emerges from the mists of the early Middle Ages through the clues hidden in its place names. Many names combine a personal name with the suffix “-ing,” suggesting settlements established between 500 and 700 AD during the Bavarian migration. The first documented mention of “Tiuphinbach” appears in a deed from 1190/1200, referencing a local priest and implying the existence of an early church. By the 13th century, a fortified structure stood nearby, the seat of the Weideneck-Tiefenbach estate. The Bishops of Passau, powerful figures in the region, granted this estate as a fief. The Püchler family held it from 1370, followed by the Trübenpacher and Sinzl families. They eventually sold it to Bishop Johann Philipp Graf von Lamberg in 1690. Today, only a mound marks the spot of this lost manor. Haselbach, another estate within Tiefenbach, intertwines with the history of the von Pfeil and von Kading families from the 15th to 17th centuries. The origins of its castle remain shrouded in speculation. Hörmannsberg and Kirchberg vorm Wald, though less prominent, also existed as estates within Tiefenbach’s territory. The year 1803 marked a dramatic shift with secularization. Tiefenbach became part of the Kingdom of Bavaria, and the Bishop’s worldly power dissolved. The former estates transformed into Bavarian municipalities. In 1818, elected community leaders ushered in a new era of local governance. The mid-1800s brought architectural changes as Tiefenbach, once a small cluster of 16 houses, a church, and the sexton’s dwelling, began to expand. Meanwhile, its vast parish shrank as new parishes formed. The late 19th and early 20th centuries saw infrastructure improvements. A water supply system arrived in 1885, followed by the Untere Waldbahn railway in 1890, post offices in Tiefenbach (1899) and Haselbach (1900), and connection to a motorized postal route in 1908. Tiefenbach’s population grew despite the losses of World War I. By 1930, it exceeded 1,200. World War II ended for Tiefenbach with the arrival of American troops in 1945. A dark chapter concluded just before the war’s end with the execution of 42 Russian prisoners of war, commemorated by a memorial. The influx of displaced people and refugees dramatically increased the population, creating challenges for the community. The post-war economic boom brought new jobs, housing developments, and infrastructure enhancements. The year 1972 saw Haselbach and Kirchberg vorm Wald incorporated into Tiefenbach. Briefly, a joint administration with Ruderting existed, but dissolved in 1979. Tiefenbach today stands as a testament to this rich and layered past.
