Salzweg

Is it true that salt built Salzweg? Well, not literally of course. But Salzweg owes its existence to the trade of this precious mineral. You see, Salzweg, which simply means “salt path” in German, lies on an ancient trade route. This route was known as the “Golden Path” or “Goldener Steig”. For centuries, this path was a vital artery connecting Passau to Bohemia, today’s Czech Republic. Salzweg flourished as a major stop on this route. Traders transported salt from Passau, a major salt distribution hub, to Bohemia. This salt came all the way from the salt mines in Reichenhall and Hallein, shipped along the rivers to Passau. As you can imagine, this trade brought considerable wealth to Salzweg. This is reflected in the name “Golden Path”, a testament to the prosperity the salt trade brought. The route wasn’t always a path of gold though. It was originally a “Saumsteig”, a path only traversable by pack animals. Imagine the hardships those traders and their animals faced, navigating muddy paths and treacherous terrain. Over time, the route was improved and eventually became a paved road. It’s fascinating to think that this once humble salt path played a part in shaping the history of Salzweg.
