Ever wondered where Passau’s oldest brewing traditions meet stunning views? You’re standing at the Peschl-Terrasse. This brewery restaurant boasts a rich history and a delightful ambiance. Let me tell you its story.

The Peschl-Terrasse is more than just a place to grab a beer. It is the brewery restaurant of the Peschl Brewery. Once, the entire Peschl Brewery was located right here in Passau’s old town. Over time, brewing operations moved elsewhere. The sudhouse, the Peschl-Terrasse, and the traditional inn have remained.

The Peschl Brewery’s roots go way back. It was first mentioned in Passau’s records in 1259. That makes it the oldest brewery in Passau and its surrounding region. It was also the sixth oldest in all of Germany. The Peschl family took ownership in 1855. They kept it until 2008. Today, the brand continues. The Peschl-Terrasse keeps the spirit alive.

Look above the entrance. You’ll spot a copy of the Mosholzer family crest. The Mosholzers owned the Peschl Brewery starting in 1574. The brewery keeps the original crest safe.

Did you know that the northern part of Nagelschmiedgasse has a nickname? Locals call it “Peschlbergerl”. It’s all because of the Peschl-Terrasse’s popularity.

The Peschl-Terrasse offers more than just history and beer. From the partially covered terrace, you get great views of the Danube River. The Batavian Room is also inside. It can host 75 people. With its dark wood paneling, it offers a medieval atmosphere.

The Peschl-Terrasse has hosted important events too. The German-Italian Society of Passau was founded here on February 14, 1993.

The Peschl-Terrasse faced challenges even after the brewery closed in 2008. The former brewery site was bought by the Gerchgroup in 2015. The “Peschl-Quartiere” housing project began. It stalled. Work stopped completely in 2022.

When you visit the Peschl-Terrasse, you’re experiencing a piece of Passau’s soul. Enjoy the beer. Soak in the atmosphere. Remember the centuries of brewing tradition that live on in this special place.
