“Is this where the three rivers become one?” a curious voice asked. Indeed, standing here in Lower Bavaria, in the heart of Passau, you witness a spectacle of nature. Right before your eyes, the waters of the Inn, the Ilz, and the Danube converge, their currents merging in a swirling dance of colors. Lower Bavaria, a region steeped in history, unfolds before you like an ancient tapestry. For centuries, this strategic location at the confluence of these mighty rivers has played a pivotal role in shaping Lower Bavaria’s destiny. Long before the Romans established their presence, the Celtic Boii tribe called this region home. It was they who established Boiodurum, the precursor to Passau, nestled within the present-day Innstadt district. You can almost hear the echoes of Roman legions marching through the streets, for Passau, then known as Batavis, was an important Roman colony and military outpost. They recognized the strategic importance of this location, and their legacy is still visible in the ruins and artifacts that whisper tales of a bygone era. As the Roman Empire waned, new powers emerged. In 739, the English missionary Saint Boniface, a pivotal figure in the Christianization of Germany, founded the diocese of Passau. This diocese, one of the largest in the Holy Roman Empire, extended its influence across what is now Austria and Bavaria, forever linking Lower Bavaria with the ebb and flow of European power. Lower Bavaria has weathered storms, both literal and figurative. A devastating fire swept through the city in 1662, leaving much of it in ashes. Yet, from the ashes, a new Passau arose, this time adorned with the opulent flourishes of the Baroque period, a testament to the resilience of the people and the enduring spirit of Lower Bavaria. Stand here a while longer, and let the spirit of Lower Bavaria wash over you, a place where history comes alive, a testament to the enduring power of nature and the legacy of those who came before.
