What secrets do these stones whisper? Burg Reschenstein stands before us. It is a testament to medieval might and silent witness to centuries of change.

Burg Reschenstein is nestled on a wooded ridge. The Ilz River loops around it. This strategic location is near the Hals district of Passau.

First mentioned in written records in 1384, Burg Reschenstein was an outpost of Hals Castle. This high medieval complex features a square keep. Its purpose was clear to protect and defend.

In the early 16th century, a bishop’s administrator resided in this spur castle. Later, it was abandoned and fell into disrepair. A border agreement with Bavaria in 1690 returned it to the Hals county.

Between 1816 and 1819, parts of Burg Reschenstein’s walls were used to build the Hals parish church. Imagine stones from a fortress finding new life in a house of worship.

Franz Stockbauer, the founder of Löwenbrauerei Passau, purchased Burg Reschenstein in 1907. He transformed it into a country estate. Even beer barons sought refuge in these historic walls.

During World War II’s end, Burg Reschenstein served as a temporary refugee camp. Its strong walls offered shelter to those displaced by conflict.

Today, Burg Reschenstein is privately owned. Only the keep has been renovated. It is roofed and usable. The remaining structures exist as ruins. Some parts have vanished entirely.

The slender keep rises about 15 meters. A small wall of about 20 meters in circumference adjoins it to the north. This addition is partially covered by a pointed roof. Windows were added later.

Access is through a gate on the west side. A heavy iron door of recent make secures it. Unfortunately, the castle cannot be toured. Trees obstruct a clear view. Yet the path itself holds charm.

The route across the Ilz bridge through the forest feels remote. It is surprisingly quaint despite being only a few kilometers from Passau’s center. Weathered wall remains surround the castle rock.

Burg Reschenstein also called Burg Hinterhals highlights its role as an outwork of Burg Hals. This explains its design.

Listed as an architectural monument of Hals. It is also a ground monument. The Bavaria Atlas recognizes it as a site of medieval and early modern findings.

So, as we stand here. Let us appreciate Burg Reschenstein. It is more than just stone and ruin. It is a symbol of resilience. It is a landmark of history.
