Have you ever wondered about the stories bronze figures could tell? The Sirene Sculpture before you is one such storyteller. Created by Nic Jonk in 1976, this artwork stands gracefully at the Valkenburgerstraat corner of Anne Frankstraat in Amsterdam-Centrum.

This Sirene is not just a sculpture. It is a vision in bronze. Imagine a siren emerging from the waves, wings spread wide. She shows her mermaid tail. Nic Jonk captured her essence with round forms. He emphasized her breasts, legs, and face, giving her a sensual appeal.

The Sirene Sculpture stands on a basalt base. This adds to its imposing presence. Its location seems to point to another kind of siren. It stands in front of a police and fire station.

Look closely at the base of the Sirene. You will find Nic Jonk’s signature and the year 1976. The name of the Binder-Schmidt foundry is also there. Perhaps these details were added later.

Nic Jonk reportedly cast seven Sirene sculptures. This one is the first. Another, numbered 2 of 7 from 1980, rests near his grave in Grootschermer.

Other Sirene sculptures exist in different Dutch cities. Hilversum has one from 1968. Hengelo has one from 1970. Schijndel and Veldhoven also boast Sirene sculptures.

This Sirene Sculpture captures the imagination. It reminds us of mythology and art. It invites us to reflect on beauty and symbolism. As you continue your tour, remember the story of this Sirene. Remember the vision of Nic Jonk. It is a memorable piece of Amsterdam’s artistic landscape.
