In the heart of Amsterdam, on Frederiksplein, stands the Monument Walraven van Hall. A poignant tribute to a man known as the “Bankier van het Verzet” – the Banker of the Resistance. The monument isn’t a towering statue or an elaborate frieze. Instead, it’s a fractured bronze tree, a powerful symbol of a life cut short. The Monument Walraven van Hall depicts a tree seemingly split in two by a low wall. One side holds the remaining trunk, while the other displays a chaotic tangle of branches. This striking image represents Walraven van Hall’s tragic execution by the Nazis in 1945. The bronze is meticulously crafted to resemble wood, adding to the sculpture’s realism. The fallen branches, symbolizing van Hall’s extensive secret network, also serve as a seating area. This creates a space for reflection and conversation, a fitting tribute to the man who brought people together in resistance. Walraven van Hall, working alongside his brother Gijs, devised a brilliant system of loans and counterfeit bonds to fund the Dutch resistance. They used the National Support Fund to channel millions of guilders to underground organizations. This money aided those in hiding, supported strikes, and even financed the underground press. The Monument Walraven van Hall stands opposite the Dutch Central Bank. This location is significant. It was here that van Hall orchestrated the biggest bank fraud in Dutch history, diverting funds to support the resistance effort. A plaque at the base of the sculpture reads: “WALRAVEN VAN HALL, BANKIER VAN HET VERZET, 1906-1945”. This simple inscription serves as a permanent reminder of his courage and sacrifice. The Monument Walraven van Hall was unveiled on September 3, 2010. This unveiling coincided with an exhibition about van Hall at the Verzetsmuseum Amsterdam (Resistance Museum). The monument was the brainchild of Hans Weijers, a retired doctor inspired by a documentary about van Hall’s life. He spent five years raising the necessary funds. Today, the Monument Walraven van Hall stands as a testament to a quiet hero. His bravery and ingenuity played a crucial role in the Dutch resistance. The broken tree, a symbol of a life tragically cut short, serves as a powerful reminder of the sacrifices made during wartime.
